The 2017-2018 school year begins on Wednesday, August 30 but the district’s incoming kindergartners will Start Smart by transitioning gradually to their school experience.
Kindergarten students will not be attending school August 30-September 1, 2017. Instead, individual “get to know me” meetings will be scheduled with students, families, and teachers. Kindergarten families will be contacted by their elementary school to schedule their appointment on one of these three days. At this meeting, students will meet their teacher and see their classroom.
The following week, September 5-8, kindergartners will be attending half days, either morning or afternoon, in small groups. This will support students as they get to know their teacher and peers, and learn daily routines. Northlake and Columbia Heights kindergartners who ride the school bus will be transported to and from school on these half days. Columbia Valley Gardens, Mint Valley, and Robert Gray students who ride the school bus will be transported one way only. Morning kindergartners will ride to school on the bus and families will pick-up at mid-day. Families will drop afternoon kindergartners off at mid-day and students will ride the school bus home. Kessler, Olympic, and St. Helens are not served by buses, and families will ensure their student gets to and from school.
Kindergartners will attend school full days beginning September 11.
